Long-distance child custody tips

Co-parenting is one of the best custody arrangements for the well-being of your child, as long as the other parent is not a threat to the health and safety of the child. Joint custody may be a viable option for your family. Things can get complex, however, if one of you decides to move away

When you do not live near your child, you may assume joint custody is not feasible. However, it is possible to manage this situation. Here are some long-distance custody tips to help you.

Use technology to keep in touch

Thanks to modern resources, you can connect with your kid even when he or she is hundreds of miles away from you. Texting, making phone calls and video chatting are all great ways to maintain your relationship despite the distance. Harness the tools you have to make the best out of the circumstances. You can still have consistent communication even if your child is away from you for weeks or months at a time.

Establish and maintain a consistent schedule

Scheduling conflicts can create a lot of problems for co-parents. While it is sometimes necessary to be flexible, you should generally stick to a strict schedule. This means adhering to specified pick-up and drop-off times. Create an arrangement and stick to it as much as possible. Consistency helps everyone manage their expectations.

Send letters and gifts

While a video chat or phone call may help you keep in contact, you should also send some physical items when your child is away. Go the extra mile to show your child that you are thinking about him or her. Send gift packages and handwritten letters. This will help your kid feel appreciated and loved by both parents.

Long-distance co-parenting is not always easy, but it is worth it if you and the court believe it is the best arrangement for your child.
