The dangers of dating during your divorce

Your divorce may seem to consume all your emotional energy right now. Nevertheless, it will eventually come to an end. You may want to get a jumpstart on your future by looking for a new love interest. Unfortunately, dating too soon may cause more problems than it solves.

According to the Pew Research Center, your chances of remarrying after a divorce rise as you get older. Naturally, before you marry again, you probably must date to find the right person. Still, dating during divorce proceedings can be dangerous. Here are three risks you may encounter if you enter the dating pool prematurely:

1. Legal complications

During divorce proceedings, private matters often become part of the public record. While dating may be an effective way to move on after a bad marriage, you do not want your actions to complicate your divorce. This is particularly true if you have children. That is, if you focus too much on a new love interest, your soon-to-be ex-spouse may argue that you are an unfit parent.

2. Emotional conflicts

If you and your spouse had marital problems for some time, you may have emotional scars that need to heal before you begin dating. On the other hand, you and your partner may be on good terms. Still, divorce can take a tremendous emotional toll on anyone. Waiting until you have addressed your feelings before beginning to date may increase your odds of meeting the right person and forming a meaningful relationship.

3. Financial problems

Both divorce and dating can be expensive. If you try to entertain a new love interest with dinners, concerts, movies or trips, you may have fewer resources to devote to divorce expenses. You may also have less money to spend on helping your children adjust to life in a post-divorce world. Accordingly, even though frugality may make dating difficult, it may also help you better manage your divorce.

While going through a divorce, you likely want to begin to focus on your future as soon as possible. While finding a new partner may be high on your priority list, doing so while navigating divorce proceedings may not be the best approach. Nevertheless, by understanding the dangers of dating during your divorce, you can make the right decision for you and your family.
