How Can I Make Visitations Easier on My Child?

When you get a divorce in California, one of the hardest parts is helping your children adjust. Regardless of their ages, children have to go through an adjustment period. It can be difficult for some children. One of the most trying things is visitation. It is new and disturbing for them to have to move between houses when they have not done that before. There are some things you can do to make visitation easier on your kids.

Above all else, you should keep a positive attitude, according to Modern Mom. You never want to talk down about your ex-spouse. You should not talk to your children about how it upsets you that they have to go with their other parent. You need to keep things positive and make the whole experience something happy.

You also need to prioritize visitations. Do not reschedule unless it is essential. Do not encourage your children to reschedule or cancel either. Stick to the schedule or make changes as time goes on to accommodate everyone's needs.

You should be flexible as well. You want to be open to changes or alterations. This is especially true when your child needs a change due to his or her schedule. You do not want to make your child feel bad because he or she has an activity or wants to go with friends. Be willing to change things up when needed.

Helping your kids adjust to visitation takes time and patience. Do not discount your children's feelings. Let them talk about how they feel and support them. Make visitation something they look forward to. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
